Adoption Guidelines
We strive to provide adoption opportunities for animals that are healthy and have a good temperament. All animals receive initial temperament testing and vaccinations from Tulare County Animal Control Shelter staff, but adopters do need to obtain veterinary care for their new pet generally within two weeks of the adoption.
- Dogs are adopted out as companions. Guard, hunting, or working dogs are only considered upon approval.
- Dogs are not to be placed as outside pets, unless adequate shelter is provided and suitable for the breed.
- All dogs must be provided with a fenced area or some other humane opportunity for exercise under control. No dogs are to be kept chained on a regular basis.
- Indoor only cats are highly recommended.
- It is mandatory that the adopter have the animal spayed or neutered on a timely basis.
- All adoptions must be in compliance with local and state laws, including licensing.
- Tulare County Animal Control reserves the right to contact persons listed on the adoption form, including vets and landlords. In addition, Tulare County Animal Control reserves the right to refuse adoptions and to follow up the adoption with a visit to the new home.
- Although a child can become involved in the pet’s care, the adult must be willing to act as the animal’s primary caretaker. The adult is also legally responsible for the pet. Adults need to adopt because they want a pet, not because their children do.
- Tulare County Animal Control reserves the right to refuse adoption to anyone. No animal will be adopted to any person having a history of losing, giving away, selling or having animals injured or killed. No animal will be adopted to any person who fails to provide accurate information on the adoption application. Adopters must be age 18 or older.
- Prospective adopters must be willing to provide identification and/or documents to support this information. They agree to have Tulare County Animal Control visit their home and/or contact their landlord. They agree to spend the time and money necessary to provide training, medical treatment and proper care for this pet.
